Vence is five miles north of Nice with the nearest coast being at Cagnes sur Mer. It is a cultural and artistic centre with a winter population of 15,000 which rises to 40,000 in summer. It was the seat of artists Matisse and Chagal. The inner town is walled and mediaeval with fine views of the mountains and the Mediterranean coast.

Vence and St Paul de Vence are at the heart of the prosperous development that spreads north from Nice into the Alps Maritimes.
Despite this development, the old towns retain their ancient features and their French charm and way of life. For much more about Vence; access the internet via Vence Alpes Maritimes France
