Spalding
recently celebrated in Speyer the golden jubilee of the twinning.
The celebrations included , among other things, a big reception
for about 250 people, at which two former Chairmen of South Holland
Council, Alan Biggadike and George Hastings, were awarded the
Twinning medal of the City of Speyer with a citation for their
work in twinning and two bottles of wine. Several other
German and English people connected with the twinning also received
citations and wine. Entertainment was provided by a German
acting duo, who performed “Dinner for One” in English, and by
a German quartet and the Peterborough Morris Dancers.
An
commemorative oak tree was planted by the Oberbürgermeister and
the Chairman, and a joint concert was held with the Mozartchor
and the South Holland Singers.
Over
the week end, a youth football tournament was held, at which a
Long Sutton team played against teams of various nationalities.
A
trip on the Rhine to Worms was also enjoyed by Friends of Speyer.
