Harlaxton Twinning Association signed its charter with Pontmain, Mayenne France in May 1987.

Pontmain, which lies in a scenic area on the north-west border of the Departement of Mayenne, is about 8 miles north east of Fougeres and within easy reach of Fougeres forest. It has a population of approximately 1000 and a mainly agricultural based culture. A large milk products factory,on the outskirts of the village provides many jobs for the local population

It is a centre for pilgrimages, due to a visitation by the Virgin Mary seen by village children. A large Basilica has been erected on the site of this visitation and many people visit for healing.
