Grantham
(population 37,000) is twinned with Sankt Augustin (population 53,000),
approx 20kms SE of Bonn, Germany.
The two towns are similar in several ways, the most obvious being
that they have no heavy industry and many inhabitants commute daily
to the Capital (Bonn has now relinquished this status to Berlin).
The twinning came about through interest created by Scouts making
exchange visits between the two towns, leading to the signing of Charters
in Sankt Augustin (1980) and Grantham (1981).
Since that time there have been many exchange visits by sports teams,
dance/music schools, handbell ringers and secondary schools.
We have given and received gifts of telephone kiosks, mail boxes,
and street names. There is even a Sankt Augustin/Bonn tram which has
been named "Grantham"!
