"The Association was formally founded in
1987 to promote links with Trangé, a village on the outskirts of Le
Mans, Northern France.
Originally villagers were from Dunston, but now they come also from
Nocton and Metheringham. Currently there are as many families from Nocton
as from Dunston. Members include families with children, couples and
singles, and cover the whole age spectrum with the eldest being in their
eighties.
We try to match English families/people with French families/people
of similar age and interests.
Visits take place every year, generally in spring or summer, with visiting
and hosting in alternate years.
The visits normally include a weekend and last three days with a day
travelling at each end. During the visits a programme of entertainment
is organised by the villages which always includes a day-long visit
to a local place of interest. In April 2009 we shall visit Trangé.
When the French visit us, communal entertainment is paid for from Association
funds, with members providing accommodation and funding any private
entertainment they choose. All the members may get involved in fund
raising and a committee coordinates and organises the communal events.
When we visit Trangé we pay our own transport costs and the hosts provide
the accommodation and entertainment. In September we had a Hog Roast
and on 28 February 2009 we shall be having a Casino Evening in Dunston
Village Hall. And every year recently we have had the popular Duck Race
at Dunston.
Speaking French although helpful is by no means essential; many close
friendships have been formed drawing pictures on paper tablecloths.
The wine does help!
