Parigne L Eveque established
since the 6th centuray is a small town of about 4,400 persons about
9 miles to the south east of Le Mans. The area is rural with pine woods,
a large lake and many miles of footpaths. Its church was founded by
St Julian but destryed by the Normans. Bishop Avesguad built the present
church in the 10th century , though the round tower dates from the 16th
century. In the cemetery there is a little chapel with a round tower
known as " the Lantern of the Dead" which used to house a
lantern which acted as a beacon for pilgrims on their way to St James
of Compostella.
