Parigne L Eveque established since the 6th centuray is a small town of about 4,400 persons about 9 miles to the south east of Le Mans. The area is rural with pine woods, a large lake and many miles of footpaths. Its church was founded by St Julian but destryed by the Normans. Bishop Avesguad built the present church in the 10th century , though the round tower dates from the 16th century. In the cemetery there is a little chapel with a round tower known as " the Lantern of the Dead" which used to house a lantern which acted as a beacon for pilgrims on their way to St James of Compostella.

Although life still centres largely on agriculture-with two agricultural shows organised each year-many other trades are represented in the town and there is also a wide range of shops , a full complement of medical facilities and residential accommodation for senoir citizens.
There are good facilities for sports, leisure and culture and an annual exhibition of paintings is held, as well as a carnival each February.
