Alford
and District Twinning Association was formed on June 29th 1995 with the aim of linking up with another
European community. Alford is in the county of Lincolnshire, England. Lincolnshire is the second
largest and most sparsely populated county in England and is situated on the east coast between the
Humber estuary and the Wash. Alford lies at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds about six miles by road
from the coast and near to the towns of Skegness and Louth. The population is approximately 3000. Alford
is one of about forty six communities in Lincolnshire twinned with others within Europe. Most of these
links are with France and of these twenty nine are with communities in the county of La Sarthe, situated
just below Normandy in Northern France. The "county town" of La Sarthe is Le Mans, home of
the famous twenty four hour motor race.
Contact was made with the community of Conlie, La Sarthe, France in early 1997. After exploratory visits
by council representatives of both towns in 1995 a decision was made to make exchange visits. One year
a group from Alford visit Conlie and the next year vice versa. Three such visits have been made by each
town. Having visited each others communities once, the decision was made to officially twin. Formal
charters were signed by the mayors of each town and the chairmen of the respective twinning associations
during a visit to Alford on 28 08 1999 and to Conlie on 22 04 2000.
